Mmm, hello, I’m from Tianchang, ah, which is a little city locate – ah, located in, ah, ah, east of the Anhui Province. Ah, hmm, my hometown is very beautiful, in my opinion. I – I have a little brother and he- he is l- lovely. [The subject now goes on to read abstracts from the Analects of Confucius in her own Tianchanghua dialect. (See the detailed commentary below.) She had a little difficulty with this and has not provided a pinyin transliteration. A reading in Putonghua (Mandarin) can be heard on the Hebei 1 sample.]

COMMENTARY
This is a good strong accent with a few notable features such as “ong” for “on” and problems with the /w/ phone. The subject was quite nervous, and this is evident throughout the recording.
The subject’s hometown, Tianchang, is a small city in northeast Anhui and is located on a spur of the province that juts eastward into neighbouring Jiangsu, just to the north of Yangzhou. Her native dialect belongs to the Jianghuai group and it is quite useful to compare this sample with examples from Jiangsu, such as the sample from Yangzhou in Jiangsu 33.
