ORTHOGRAPHIC TRANSCRIPTION OF UNSCRIPTED SPEECH:

I was born and raised in Carbondale, Illinois. My mother was actually raised in Kansas. And my father was born and raised in Alton, Illinois, which is about twenty, thirty minutes from Saint Louis. My dad and I have a lot in common; we’re actually into cars and airplanes. I’ve a master’s degree in, uh, workforce education, and my bachelor’s degree is actually in automotive. My father comes from a similar background — bachelor’s in aviation and then a master’s in higher education as well. We’ve actually rebuilt several cars together and his, uh, current airplane. He actually has a Citabria, and it was what we call “ground-looped.” And that’s when somebody — when they come in to land the airplane — they actually loop it. Um, and the airplane actually ends upside down. Uh, I don’t know what the cause of that was, or how that happened, but, uh, basically we had to do a, um, total re-restoration on the airplane. And, um, we had to put, uh, new skins, rebuild the motor, new interior, basically everything from the ground up. We have rebuilt a 1975 Corvette. It was also in a wreck, and we had to, uh, replace, uh, the front clip. We actually had to take the whole body off the frame. Uh, we bought a new frame, a new body, and rebuilt the motor, and, uh, new interior. So basically it became a brand-new 1975 Corvette. Uh, we’ve also, uh, rebuilt, uh, several Porsches. That was my first vehicle, 1983 Porsche 944. And, uh, so he and I have a lot of that in common.

The archive provides:

  • Recordings of accent/dialect speakers from the region you select.
  • Text of the speakers’ biographical details.
  • Scholarly commentary and analysis in some cases.
  • In most cases, an orthographic transcription of the speakers’ unscripted speech.  In a small number of cases, you will also find a narrow phonetic transcription of the sample (see Phonetic Transcriptions for a complete list).  The recordings average four minutes in length and feature both the reading of one of two standard passages, and some unscripted speech. The two passages are Comma Gets a Cure (currently our standard passage) and The Rainbow Passage (used in our earliest recordings).
