So, a little background on myself: Um, I grew up, or I was born in Owensboro, Kentucky, but whenever I was younger, I moved around a lot, so I went from Owensboro, Kentucky, to Lakeland, Florida, and then after that, I went to Jacksonville, Florida. And then me and my family decided to do this huge jump to Hartford, Connecticut. My dad’s family mostly lived up there, and we would go to the beach, and there, there was one beach that had a carousel on it, and you could get a gold ring. And I remember getting that ring while I was there, and I got to keep the book and the ring. It was one of the most amazing things when I was younger. After that, we moved back to Owensboro, Kentucky, where I still currently live, um, and I’ve lived there ever since.

The archive provides:

  • Recordings of accent/dialect speakers from the region you select.
  • Text of the speakers’ biographical details.
  • Scholarly commentary and analysis in some cases.
  • In most cases, an orthographic transcription of the speakers’ unscripted speech.  In a small number of cases, you will also find a narrow phonetic transcription of the sample (see Phonetic Transcriptions for a complete list).  The recordings average four minutes in length and feature both the reading of one of two standard passages, and some unscripted speech. The two passages are Comma Gets a Cure (currently our standard passage) and The Rainbow Passage (used in our earliest recordings).
