It was an old library for the public come and see different kind of records, and, uh, day-to-day newspapers to look up, um, city stuff for purposes like blueprints of the building, or blueprints of different buildings that had old records here. So I was up in the catacombs of 300. I was the only one in there, and I had all the lights down below me turned off. So I was the only one up there, so as I, up there, vacuuming the catwalks up there. Heard a voice going “What are you doing up here?” And there was only John up there that was hung; was the first person hung in Minneapolis. So I hurried up and got the catwalks done and left. SCHOLARLY COMMENTARY:
The speaker uses the phrase “an that,” or more specifically “an ‘at.” This is an idiom that Mirriam-Webster says is “used to refer to an idea just mentioned.” In Minnesota, it’s often used as a sort of shorthand for “and that kind of stuff.”

The archive provides:
- Recordings of accent/dialect speakers from the region you select.
- Text of the speakers’ biographical details.
- Scholarly commentary and analysis in some cases.
- In most cases, an orthographic transcription of the speakers’ unscripted speech. In a small number of cases, you will also find a narrow phonetic transcription of the sample (see Phonetic Transcriptions for a complete list). The recordings average four minutes in length and feature both the reading of one of two standard passages, and some unscripted speech. The two passages are Comma Gets a Cure (currently our standard passage) and The Rainbow Passage (used in our earliest recordings).
