New Jersey’s the kinda place where, if you’re crossing the street, people driving will speed up when you’re in the crosswalk. New Jersey’s the kinda place where you’ll be at a bar, and you’ll just look at somebody, and they’ll be like, “Hey, you, you, you wanna start somethin’, bro? What’s your problem, bro?” And you can just get into a fight from just looking at somebody. That’s New Jersey for you.
Yeah, so, when I was growing up, my house was situated near, uh, like at the top of a hill, w-uh, near a park and a swimming pool, so we always used to ride our bikes down the hill to go to the swimming pool. And we’re all riding down one day, and I had not realized, but they had placed speed bumps in the parking lot, like right when you come down to the end of the hill. So, I’m riding my bike, and I didn’t see the speed bump, *tsk* and I’m in my bathing suit, on the bike, and I hit the speed bump and fly over the handlebars. And the handlebars got caught on my bathing suit and ripped it clean off. So, I flew off the bike [laughs] and, uh, was just laying there naked, in pain, bleeding … [laughs]

The archive provides:
- Recordings of accent/dialect speakers from the region you select.
- Text of the speakers’ biographical details.
- Scholarly commentary and analysis in some cases.
- In most cases, an orthographic transcription of the speakers’ unscripted speech. In a small number of cases, you will also find a narrow phonetic transcription of the sample (see Phonetic Transcriptions for a complete list). The recordings average four minutes in length and feature both the reading of one of two standard passages, and some unscripted speech. The two passages are Comma Gets a Cure (currently our standard passage) and The Rainbow Passage (used in our earliest recordings).
