ORTHOGRAPHIC TRANSCRIPTION OF UNSCRIPTED SPEECH:
Uh, I was born in Grants Pass, Oregon, on two acres, uh, relatively right across the road from the Rogue River — uh, so out in the wilderness. Uh, had — was raised by my mom and dad with my sister and two older brothers. Uh, we had a lot of chickens, geese, goats, cats, all kinds of different animals. Uh, but my parents then decided “we have too many neighbors” and the area was getting too occupied, uh, so two acres wasn’t enough. So they moved us up the road five miles, and they now live on twenty-seven acres. Uh, still have the chickens and turkeys and cats and now a dog. Uh, but no goats or anything so. Um, I have always lived in nature and tried the big city of Portland for one year and decided it was too big for me. So I moved back to southern Oregon and, um, yeah, am looking for property of my own, I guess. I’m definitely a country girl.

The archive provides:
- Recordings of accent/dialect speakers from the region you select.
- Text of the speakers’ biographical details.
- Scholarly commentary and analysis in some cases.
- In most cases, an orthographic transcription of the speakers’ unscripted speech. In a small number of cases, you will also find a narrow phonetic transcription of the sample (see Phonetic Transcriptions for a complete list). The recordings average four minutes in length and feature both the reading of one of two standard passages, and some unscripted speech. The two passages are Comma Gets a Cure (currently our standard passage) and The Rainbow Passage (used in our earliest recordings).
