Received Pronunciation 5
Elizabeth Suzuma
Demonstrating the Received Pronunciation dialect of English is Elizabeth Suzuma, who reads Comma Gets a Cure. Born of British colonial parents in the final years of the British Raj in India, Elizabeth attended several European universities and holds a first-class honors degree from University College London. Her interest in teaching English stems from childhood when, as an 11-year-old, she was charged with helping children from abroad who came to stay in her parents’ home near London communicate better in English. She subsequently taught English and other languages in a range of schools and institutions, and for a number of years ran her own language teaching and translation agency.
Following a drive by the Japanese government in the late 1960s, she and her ex-diplomat Japanese husband hosted Japanese businessmen sent to London for up to a year at a time to absorb British culture and language, and she still acts as a trustee for Three Wheels, a Japanese Shin Buddhist temple nearby.
Elizabeth lives in London, where she offers tailored accent softening courses via several popular teaching platforms such as SuperProf.com and TutorDirect.com.
