Um, so just about my hobbies or something: Um, in my free time, I dance ballet, um, three times a week, um, with point shoes and everything. Um, in holidays, I often go surfing, windsurfing in Sardinia in autumn; um, like this year, the second week of my holidays I will go there, for surfing and stuff. And after my school here, I will, I wanna go to Australia for just living there or made, make a s… um, another school or something and to learn about the new culture or something like that, yeah. And after that, I wanna go, come back and study in the ETH, um, in Zurich, um, like biology or something. Um, I have little brother; I think, yeah, I spend much of time with him, just playing or something, and I often do something with my friends, like my four best friends; um, I go to concerts or just shopping or something like that, yeah.
[Subject speaks in German]: ähm, also tanze sit ich vieri bin, ballet, und han oft uffüehrige gmacht und so, han früehner harfe gspielt und ich mach au no akrobatik recht oft und liechtathletik, und jo so was schuel aabelangt bin ich chli minimalistisch i allem mögliche, ähm, weg dem muesi jetz wiederhole, aber ich finde dass schuel weniger wichtig isch als irgendwie ich selber also hanich do chli e lausigi iistellig dezue, ähm, über, ähm, min nochname, ich bin halb, also ich bin früehner mol Polnisch gsi aber jede meint ich segi Russin. [Translation: Um, so I dance since I was 4 years old, ballet, and often did stage performances. I used to play the harp, and I also often do acrobatics and track and field sports; and yes, concerning school, I am a little bit minimalist. Um, that’s also why I am repeating now, but in my opinion, school isn’t as myself, so I have quite a lousy attitude. Um, concerning, um, my surname, I am half, well I used to be Polish, but most people think that I’m Russian.]TRANSCRIBED BY: Lukas Tribelhorn

The archive provides:
- Recordings of accent/dialect speakers from the region you select.
- Text of the speakers’ biographical details.
- Scholarly commentary and analysis in some cases.
- In most cases, an orthographic transcription of the speakers’ unscripted speech. In a small number of cases, you will also find a narrow phonetic transcription of the sample (see Phonetic Transcriptions for a complete list). The recordings average four minutes in length and feature both the reading of one of two standard passages, and some unscripted speech. The two passages are Comma Gets a Cure (currently our standard passage) and The Rainbow Passage (used in our earliest recordings).
