One of my favorite, uh, memories is [that] one of our neighbors had an apple tree in their backyard, and she also had a big dog. And, uh, I dunno what, uh, presented or what made us do it that day, but it was a group of us. Uh, we waited – we knew what time she was like a clock; we knew when she went to the store. So we waited ‘til she went to the store she put the dog in. Me, being a girl and the smallest, they hoisted me up in the tree, to tar – start, uh, throwin’ down apples. Well, she must’ve forgot somethin’, or whatever – somethin’ made her came back – come back to the house. Well, the dog could hear us in the backyard, and he was goin’ off, so she let the dog out. That dog came runnin’ out, barkin’. Now the lookout that we had on the corner: We don’t know what happened to him because he was supposed to let us know that she was comin’ back. I was throwin’ apples down; they heard – the dog came, they ran, they left me up in the tree. So I’m pinned in the tree with the dog at the bo – at the, uh, bottom of the tree just barkin’ and I’m just – I’m just scared to death.

N’ she comes out n’ she’s like “What’re you doin’ up in that tree?”

And, uh, I was like “Nothin’!”

She said, “Yeah?” She said, “Where the rest of – where the rest of the gang?”

I said, “They left me.”

She said, “Girl, get down from that tree.”

So she, I said, “That dog, your dog gon’ bite me.”

And she called the dog, and she held the dog so I could get down. And, um, *tsk* before I could even make it home, my mom was like, “What were you doin’?”

I was like, “Nothin’.” She already – she already knew.

And, uh, she said “Wait till your daddy get home.” Well, my brothers got the beatin’, but we all got punished; we had to clean her yard for, I think like, a week or two weeks we had to clean her yard, pick up any apples that fell, and, uh, she told us, she said, “Next time just come to the door and ask, ask [laughs], ask for the apples, but I don’t think they taste the same after that, after you couldn’t swipe ‘em.
